A Number of Costumes

Because I am not a stay-at-home mom and I have variety of jobs (mostly coaching cheer) that keep me away from home more than I would like, I rarely feel like I get to do many "mom" things.  When my kids are in their 30s talking about their childhoods, they are not going to be talking about the great breakfasts I had ready for them as before school each day or the songs I sang as I tucked them into bed.  They are probably not going to use words like immaculate when describing the condition of our house or talk about how I waited for them in the carpool line.  However, one thing they will always remember is the Halloween costumes I made for them.

People call me crafty.  Although I think that word is kind of cheap, I would definitely say that I am a maker.  I love to create things using a variety of methods and mediums.  I have not found a niche.  Instead I just keep learning new skills and combining them with old ones.  I love to sew, knit, crochet, paper craft, paint, make jewelry, bake cakes, . . . anything that allows me to make something.  Therefore, Halloween costumes are for sure one of my things.

Since my 4 children are finally all to the age where everyone can walk to trick-or-treat while also still young enough to want to dress up, I have been capitalizing on this situation.  While I can still make them, they are required to pick their costumes as a group and must all be part of a theme.

Last year, they were "People of the Sea."  Zeke was Poseidon, Eli was a pirate, Selah was mermaid, and Titus was a sailor. These were so much fun to sew and the kids looked super cute.

This year the kids decided they wanted to be Lego Star Wars characters.  What started out as a simple idea turned in to quite an undertaking.  However, in the end, the costumes were awesome (although a bit impractical as far as walking long distances and traveling in the car:).  Zeke was C3PO, Eli was Luke, Selah was Leia, and Titus was Yoda.

  1. I'm so proud of you! I hope you enjoy posting on your new blog. Those Stars Wars LEGO costumes turned out great! And don't forget that I helped with the duct tape.

Our children may not remember the great breakfasts, but they'll definitely remember a creative and caring mother who loved about them very, very much.

I'm excited to see the next post.

  2. These are awesome! How did you make them? My son wants to be a Lego Star Wars Character for Halloween. While he has some preferences, in the long run I don't think it matters which one. What did you use? Thanks! Parkinj1@verion.net
